Royal Society Te Apārangi is New Zealand’s national academy and research-funding body, founded in 1867 and constituted as an independent statutory organisation under an Act of Parliament. It administers the Marsden Fund and related fellowship and partnership schemes on behalf of the Crown, with annual grants reported at more than NZ$80 million across 107 projects in 2025.

Its main instruments are grants and fellowships: the Marsden Fund for investigator-led basic research, the Catalyst Fund for international science partnerships, and Rutherford Discovery Fellowships for early-career researchers. Recent Marsden support is concentrated in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and biomedical sciences after the December 2024 eligibility change that removed humanities and social sciences from the fund.

The Society acts as a peer-review administrator rather than a project-stage investor. Applicants need strong curiosity-led research, sound methods, and a clear case for contribution to the field, while the broader institution combines grant administration with advisory work, publishing, and support for early-career researchers.
