Microbiome solutions can help food systems improve crop yields and food safety, reduce fertilizer or pesticide needs, and support biodiversity and resilience. Yet many promising products struggle with reliable production at scale, a clear business model and access to the EU market. This scheduled Horizon Europe Innovation Action funds two projects of €7–8 million to tackle those barriers.

Demonstrate and commercialize microbiome solutions that leverage or support microbial communities and their interaction with a host or environment for resilient, competitive and sustainable organic and conventional food systems. Projects must address EU-market access, cost-effective and reliable production and deployment at scale, and business models for companies, SMEs and start-ups. The multi-actor work involves researchers, advisors, food and bioeconomy businesses, public authorities, policy makers, consumer associations and end users; activities start at TRL 5 and reach TRL 7–8, with testing, standards or methodologies and adoption pathways covering climate, environmental and biodiversity benefits where relevant.
