Integrating a holistic perspective in microbiome research for resilient, competitive and sustainable food systems

Funds research consortia, including businesses and startups, that study microbiomes across plants, humans and environments to unlock new food-system applications.

ClosedEuropean CommissionEU

This is a single-stage Research and Innovation Action, and the Commission expects to fund two projects from this topic's own funding line, each in the EUR 5 to 6 million range. Every consortium has to follow a multi-actor approach, bringing together researchers, businesses of every size including SMEs and startups, public authorities and policymakers, research infrastructures and civil society to

This call wants a systems-level, One Health study of microbiomes across different hosts (plants, humans, animals) and environments (water, food matrices) that also builds synergies between named European research infrastructures such as ELIXIR, MIRRI, BBMRI-ERIC and EOSC for microbiome data and biobanking, shared under FAIR principles. Proposals are expected to draw on multi-omics technologies, high-throughput sampling and phenotyping, predictive models, AI, federated learning, and in-vitro models such as organoids or organ-on-a-chip. Work should also produce reference strains or samples, standard protocols and quality-control measures through existing biobanks and data repositories, to support further microbiome research beyond the funded project itself.
