The Diabetes UK Early-Career Small Grants scheme provides awards of up to £15,000 over 12 months to early-stage researchers conducting pilot studies or small projects in diabetes at UK academic institutes or NHS Trusts. The scheme targets two career profiles: basic scientists who are no more than four years into their first academic position, and healthcare professionals who have started or completed a PhD or equivalent. Applicants must hold a permanent salary position at a qualifying UK institution and identify an institutional mentor before submitting. The 2026 round opened April 20, 2026 and closes August 4, 2026.

Eligible costs include materials, consumables, equipment, animal research costs, and collaborative travel; salary costs are generally excluded, though named specialist staff costs may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applications are reviewed internally by a Diabetes UK Research Committee Sub-Panel — there is no external peer review, which distinguishes this scheme from the Project Grants programme. The Grants Advisory Panel additionally reviews plain English summaries and public involvement sections. Medically qualified clinical lecturers are directed toward the Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers rather than this scheme.

The small grant is specifically designed to generate pilot data, establish a new technique, or initiate a collaboration that positions the researcher for larger follow-on funding. Outcome tracking by Diabetes UK shows that 90 percent of former grant holders continue active research careers, and 62 percent secure additional funding within one year post-award — evidence that the scheme functions effectively as a pipeline to larger grants. Applicants should frame their application around a single focused question with achievable 12-month milestones, demonstrate a clear diabetes relevance, and identify a committed mentor with relevant expertise in the proposed research area.
