Funds research infrastructure between $4 million and $20 million β the gap between an instrument grant and a national facility.
NSF funds research infrastructure at two ends of the scale: the Major Research Instrumentation programme at the bottom and Major Multi-user Facilities at the top. This programme covers the space between them, and exists to give NSF an agile way to fund experimental capabilities in the middle.

Design or implementation of mid-scale research infrastructure β facilities, equipment, instrumentation, cyberinfrastructure, large-scale datasets and the personnel supporting them β enabling advances in any research domain NSF supports, including upgrades to existing infrastructure.
