Databricks University Alliance
Offers universities access to Databricks teaching tools, classroom resources, and certification discounts.
The Databricks University Alliance is a Databricks program that provides faculty and students at partner universities with free access to the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform for teaching and learning purposes. As of 2026, the Alliance has over 1,000 partner universities globally. Participants gain access to the platform's Free Edition — a perpetually free learning environment — along with dedicated educator and student badges, sample notebooks for Delta Lake, MLflow, and related tools, and an online community for University Alliance members. Students who complete affiliated courses receive a 25% discount on Databricks professional certifications. An invite-only Databricks Student Fellows program also exists for high-performing students.
The program is open to universities that enroll and apply through Databricks' dedicated educator and student forms; there are no application deadlines and intake is continuous. Universities, faculty members, and individual students who are affiliated with a partner institution are eligible. For-profit entities and government agencies are outside the program's scope. The program does not include cash research grants — Databricks notes informal research collaborations with the National Science Foundation and Vanderbilt University, but those are bespoke arrangements accessible only by direct engagement with Databricks, not a public open-call program. The Laude Institute, a separate legal entity co-founded by Databricks co-founder Andy Konwinski, offers no-strings-attached grants to academic AI researchers, but operates independently of Databricks and is not administered through the University Alliance.
Institutions seeking to join should apply through the educator enrollment form on databricks.com/university. The primary value of the Alliance is practical: students and faculty gain hands-on experience with an industry-standard data and AI platform at no cost, with a clear path from coursework to professional certification. Institutions with existing data science or ML programs are the strongest candidates for adoption.
Provides faculty and students at partner universities with free Databricks platform access, teaching notebooks, and discounted certifications for data and AI education.
