The Critical Minerals and Materials Accelerator (CMMA) is a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the DOE Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) under the broader DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Topic 1 of the FY2026 CMMA FOA — designated DE-TA1-0003589, under parent notice DE-FOA-0003588 — funds research, development, and demonstration projects targeting production efficiency and material yield improvements across domestic critical mineral supply chains. The focus is on technologies that increase the amount of usable critical material extracted or recovered per unit of input, reducing waste and strengthening supply chain resilience for materials identified as critical to U.S. energy and national security.

Eligible applicants include universities, non-profit research organisations, for-profit companies, and national laboratories operating within the United States; individuals may not apply directly. A Letter of Intent was required by April 24, 2026, and the full application deadline is May 29, 2026, submitted via eere-exchange.energy.gov (the DOE-EERE application portal, cross-posted on Grants.gov). Award amounts are not specified on the portal landing page and are detailed exclusively in the FOA PDF document. Cost-share requirements, period-of-performance length, page limits, and evaluation criteria are likewise defined in the FOA PDF and were not captured at ingest.

Proposals should identify a specific critical mineral and demonstrate a clear technology pathway to measurable efficiency improvement at a defined scale. AMMTO's prior CMMA round (approximately $10 million, March 2024) provides a reference point for programme scale, though FY2026 award amounts must be confirmed from the FOA. Applications that address both technical performance and supply-chain readiness — connecting laboratory results to domestic production capacity — align well with AMMTO's mission of advancing clean energy manufacturing competitiveness.

Production and material efficiency for critical minerals — technologies that increase domestic production yields, reduce waste, and improve material recovery rates in critical mineral supply chains.
