The Michigan Applied Public Policy Research (MAPPR) grant program is administered by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) at Michigan State University and connects MSU faculty research to active Michigan and federal policy discussions. Annual awards of up to $30,000 support one-year research projects; the total pool is approximately $150,000 per cycle, supporting roughly five grants at the maximum award size. All policy areas are eligible, and the 2025 cycle listed priority topics including transportation, federal budget impacts on state programs, economic development, housing, and bridge funding for research projects disrupted by canceled federal grants.

Eligibility requires at least one MSU faculty member as principal investigator; interdisciplinary teams and projects involving graduate students are actively encouraged, as are collaborations across faculty groups. No external applicants, for-profit entities, or non-MSU universities are eligible. The 2025 cycle deadline was June 16, 2025, with award announcements expected the week of July 7, 2025. Applications were submitted as a three-page proposal by email to IPPSR. The 2026 cycle URL and dates had not been published as of the data capture date.

Grantees are required to produce a policy-relevant briefing paper of approximately ten pages (including an executive summary) and a one-to-two-page blog post or news story, both attributed to IPPSR. Proposals that identify a specific pending policy decision at the state or federal level, name the legislative or executive audience for the findings, and describe a realistic dissemination pathway to that audience tend to score more competitively. IPPSR attribution on all published deliverables is a condition of the award.

All policy areas are eligible, with 2025 priorities in transportation, federal budget impacts on state programs, economic development, housing, and bridge funding for research affected by canceled federal grants.
