The Montana Historic Preservation Grant, administered by the Montana Department of Commerce Community MT Division, funds infrastructure improvements, renovations, maintenance, and building code compliance for historic sites, historical societies, and history museums throughout Montana. To be eligible, a project must meet at least one criterion: the site is listed on a historic registry, contributes to a recognized historic district, or is at least 50 years old with documented historical significance. Maximum award per project is $350,000. The FY2026-27 funding cycle accepted applications through 11:59 p.m. on February 28, 2026; the next biennium cycle (FY2028-29) has not yet been announced as of the current date.
Match requirements vary by applicant type. For-profit entities must provide a dollar-for-dollar match equal to the full grant request (100% match). All other eligible applicants — nonprofits, local governments, tribal governments, universities, and individuals — must provide a 20% match of total project cost. Individual applicants must apply through a fiscal agent or in partnership with local government; they cannot apply directly as sole applicants. Applications are submitted through the Montana Grants and Loans Portal at montana.servicenowservices.com/mtgl.
The program is funded by the Montana legislature on a biennial basis and covers capital project costs; eligible work includes structural renovations, deferred maintenance, accessibility improvements, and code compliance upgrades at qualifying historic properties. Organizations planning for the next biennium cycle should monitor the Montana DOC website and contact the Community MT Division at 406-841-2700 to confirm when the FY2028-29 solicitation opens. Because cycles align with the Montana legislative biennium, competitive awards typically reflect the legislative appropriation passed in odd-numbered years.
