The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) issued PAS-25-073 on January 8, 2025, as a reissue of PAS-24-163, to stimulate HIV/AIDS research within NIDDK's disease mission areas aligned with NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) priorities established in NOT-OD-20-018. The program funds R01 research on systemic complications of HIV affecting NIDDK-relevant diseases: diabetes, endocrine and metabolic disorders, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, pancreatic diseases, nutrition and obesity, kidney disease, urologic diseases, and hematologic conditions. Priority topics include pathophysiology of HIV and antiretroviral therapy contributing to chronic co-morbidities, HIV reservoir characterization in GI mucosa, male genital tract, kidney, and adipose tissue, microbiome interactions with HIV in the GI and penile tracts, and the impact of social determinants of health on HIV-related co-morbidities in NIDDK disease areas.

PAS-25-073 accepts new applications, renewals, resubmissions, and revisions. Clinical trials are optional — both mechanistic/observational studies and interventional trials are responsive. NIDDK intends to fund three to five awards totaling $2,000,000 in FY2026; future-year funding depends on appropriations. Project periods may extend up to five years. Application budgets are not limited but must reflect actual needs. This PAS is one of the few NIDDK programs where foreign organizations are explicitly eligible, and foreign components are permitted — an exception to NIDDK's typical domestic-only posture. The PAS expires November 6, 2027 (extended from the original January 2027 expiry via NOT-OD-26-029).

Active 2026 due dates include June 5, 2026 (new applications) and July 5, 2026 (renewals/resubmissions), followed by October 5/November 5, 2026 cycles and continuing through 2027. NIDDK scientific contacts include Khoa Dinhdang Nguyen for Digestive Diseases and Nutrition (khoa.nguyen2@nih.gov), Deepak Nihalani for Kidney/Urologic/Hematologic Diseases (301-594-6417), and Saul Malozowski for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (sm007@nih.gov). Winning applications will integrate HIV science tightly with NIDDK disease mechanisms rather than general HIV virology.

HIV/AIDS research intersecting NIDDK mission: pathophysiology of HIV/ART-related comorbidities; HIV reservoirs in GI, kidney, adipose tissues; microbiome-HIV interactions.
