The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) administers an R56 Bridge Award as its sole formal bridge mechanism, providing one to two years of interim research support to investigators whose R01 applications received meritorious peer-review scores but were not funded due to budget constraints or portfolio limitations. NIDDK's FY2026 funding policy states explicitly that NIDDK considers interim bridge support on a "very limited case-by-case basis" for promising R01 competing applications that were not awarded. The award supports investigators in collecting the additional preliminary data needed to strengthen and resubmit their R01. NIDDK describes this as an interim support mechanism, not a standalone research program.

The R56 is not an open competition — there is no Notice of Funding Opportunity, no application portal, and no submission deadline. NIDDK program staff identify candidates proactively by reviewing the scores and portfolios of recently reviewed but unfunded R01 applications and reaching out directly to investigators they wish to bridge. Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations, universities, and research institutions; for-profit companies are not eligible for R56 bridge support. The scope covers all three NIDDK extramural divisions: Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; and Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases. Award size and specific budget are determined case by case by NIDDK program staff.

Investigators cannot improve their odds through a written application but can proactively build relationships with NIDDK program officers before or after their R01 review. NIDDK program officers attend study section meetings and are permitted to advocate for bridging specific investigators internally. The mechanism is relevant primarily to academic and non-profit researchers who received an R01 score within approximately the 20th percentile but were not funded — a situation that occurs frequently given the 10-15% pay line typical of NIDDK R01 competitions. Investigators interested in R56 consideration should contact the relevant NIDDK extramural division program officer after receiving their summary statement.

All NIDDK research areas. Awarded by NIDDK initiative to investigators with a recently scored but unfunded R01.
