The Geospace Cluster funds research on Earth's near-space environment — the mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, exosphere, magnetosphere and radiation belts — and on the inner heliosphere and the Sun's atmosphere.

What holds it together is coupling. NSF wants knowledge of the Sun–Earth system as a system, including how its parts connect through dynamical, electrodynamical and chemical processes

The Sun–Earth system — aeronomy of the mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere; magnetospheric physics including radiation belts, geomagnetic storms and substorms; solar-terrestrial physics including flares, coronal mass ejections, the solar dynamo and helioseismology; and space weather and space climate including prediction and resilience.
