Research Development Fund
Funds Texas A&M strategic equipment and infrastructure investments that strengthen core research capabilities.
The Texas A&M University Research Development Fund (RDF) is a strategic investment program administered by the TAMU Division of Research to support the broader Texas A&M research enterprise. The fund is designed to catalyze new research ventures by investing in core research facilities, major equipment, facility creation and renovation, and faculty development activities aimed at winning large external grants. Two application tracks exist: the RDF Classic track for full applications, and the RDF Recurring Fund track for ongoing infrastructure needs.
Eligibility is confined to Texas A&M University, the Texas A&M Health Science Center, the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), and Texas A&M AgriLife Research. Award amounts are not published on the program website, but the strategic infrastructure focus is consistent with investments typically in the range of major equipment or facility projects. The fund operates on a twice-yearly cycle; historical deadlines have fallen in October (fall cycle) and July (spring cycle). Applications are reviewed by the RDF Advisory Committee, and members who have submitted applications must recuse themselves from review.
Applicants competing for RDF awards should frame proposals around strategic leverage — specifically, how the requested infrastructure or equipment will enable the institution to compete for large-scale federal or private grants that would not otherwise be attainable. The clearer the connection between the investment and future external funding, the stronger the proposal. Both RDF Classic and RDF Recurring Fund submissions are reviewed by the same Advisory Committee, and the program has no sector restrictions, making it relevant across TAMU's full research portfolio from engineering to life sciences.
