FWF Clusters of Excellence is Austria's flagship research excellence programme and part of the excellentaustria initiative. It supports large, multi-institutional research consortia designed to build long-term scientific strength and international visibility across Austrian research institutions. Each cluster brings together 5 to 8 researchers across at least 3 Austrian institutions, with at least one institution authorised to award doctorates. Funding ranges from EUR 10 million to EUR 35 million per cluster over an initial 60-month term, with a planned 10-year horizon if interim scientific review is positive. Participating institutions provide 40% co-funding, while FWF covers the remaining share. The programme is currently between calls, with nine active clusters funded across the 2023 and 2024 waves. Proposals need scale, disciplinary depth, and institutional alignment; the strongest cases are likely to show a credible leadership team, a shared scientific agenda, and enough organisational backing to sustain a large consortium over several years. Its scale makes careful governance and shared decision-making essential.
