FWF ESPRIT
Funds postdoctoral independence in Austria by supporting early-career researchers through salary and project resources.
FWF ESPRIT is the Austrian Science Fund's main rolling programme for postdoctoral independence. It supports researchers at the R2 and R3 stages who have earned their doctorate within the past five years and secured a mentor at an Austrian research institution. The award runs for 36 months and covers the PI's salary at senior postdoc rate plus EUR 45,000 to EUR 75,000 in project-specific costs. Applications are submitted on a rolling basis through the elane portal in PROFI mode, making it a flexible route for researchers ready to lead an independent project without waiting for a fixed annual deadline. ESPRIT is strongest for applicants who can show early independence, a strong host environment, and a project scope that fits a relatively lean budget. It sits alongside FWF's other career-stage programmes, but it is the clearest path for an emerging investigator who is ready to step into a principal-investigator role. That makes it a practical bridge between postdoc autonomy and institutional support.
