FWF Specialized Research Groups (SFG)
Supports consortium-based research groups in Austria to build long-term scientific capacity and innovation.
FWF Specialized Research Groups (SFG) is FWF (Austrian Science Fund)'s large collaborative grant line for ambitious basic research carried out by consortia at Austrian institutions. It is built for groups that need scale, structure, and enough time to push a shared scientific agenda across a team rather than through a single principal investigator. Awards range from €3 million to €9 million for an initial 60-month term, with the option of one additional 48-month follow-up cycle. Consortia must include 3 to 12 outstanding researchers from any scientific discipline, and at least one third of the group should come from the underrepresented gender. The current call runs from 21 May 2026 to 15 September 2026 and uses a two-stage review process. This programme suits established teams that can support a sustained research programme across several investigators and justify a large, multi-year budget. It is strongest where the scientific question needs collective depth, cross-institutional coordination, and a proposal that can survive a staged review before full application.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
