Saving Native Species Program — Game Changers for Threatened Species

Funds innovative projects protecting threatened species with new tools and scientific approaches in Australia.

Saving Native Species is a Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water program worth AUD 224.5 million over four years. It is tied to Australia's Threatened Species Action Plan and targets 73 priority species. The relevant competitive grant stream in this batch is Game Changers for Threatened Species, which is administered through the Business Grants Hub on behalf of DCCEEW. The program supports fire management, predator control, habitat restoration, seed collection and propagation, translocation, surveys, monitoring, education, and newer technologies or methods. The Priority Species Grant round launched on 27 July 2023, closed on 7 September 2023, and drew 261 applications; $24 million was awarded to 61 projects. The Threat Innovations sub-stream allocates up to AUD 11.5 million for innovative technologies and methods. Applicants can include companies, non-profits, universities, and research organisations in Australia, while individuals are excluded. The strongest applications are concrete conservation projects tied to a named species, place, or method, with a clear path from proposal to field delivery. The program rewards work that can be tested, scaled, or repeated where it matters most for threatened species recovery. Proposals do best when they are practical about implementation and specific about the ecological problem they solve.
