National Industry PhD Program

Funds industry-linked doctoral scholarships embedded in Australian organisations for practical research training.

Department of Education AustraliaAustraliaGrant

The National Industry PhD Program sits inside Australia’s workforce-mobility agenda and funds universities to support doctoral candidates in co-designed research with industry partners. The Australian Government has set aside $296 million to build 1,800 Industry PhDs over 10 years. Two streams are available. The Industry Linked PhD stream supports candidates embedded in industry settings, while the Industry Researcher PhD stream supports experienced industry professionals who undertake a PhD while retaining employment and salary benefits. The program is delivered by Campus Plus on behalf of the Department of Education, runs on a multiple-round pattern, and had Round 7 under assessment in May 2026. It suits universities and companies that can share supervision and define a project with a clear industry use case. Teams that already have a stable employer, a university partner, and a research question tied to workplace needs are the cleanest fit, and Round 8 was expected in mid-2026.
