Applied PhD
Funds funding for a applied PhD conducted jointly between a Brussels research organisation and a company public body or non-profit.
Applied PhD is Innoviris's doctoral collaboration programme for Brussels research organisations working with a company, public body, or non-profit. The research organisation applies and receives the grant, while the PhD candidate spends at least half of their time at the partner entity. The partnership has to be rooted in Brussels, with the research organisation and the partner each meeting the local presence rules. The programme covers 100% of the researcher's salary plus operating, equipment, and subcontracting costs at the research organisation. It runs an annual call with a November deadline. The 2026 cycle is suspended, and a 2027 restart depends on budget. The partner must have legal personality and an exploitation site in Brussels, and the candidate must not already have enrolled in a PhD. The fit is for applied doctoral work that needs a structured three-party setup rather than a standalone lab project. Strong applications are built around a clear research question, a useful partner role, and a design that can move between the research setting and the application setting without losing coherence.
