BEL-COO (Trans-regional Innovation Project)

BEL-COO is VLAIO's cross-regional innovation route for Belgian consortia that span at least two different regions. It lets Flemish companies work with partners in Wallonia or Brussels on a joint research or development project, while each side seeks support from its own regional agency. On the Flemish side, the project runs through Onderzoeksproject or Ontwikkelingsproject support. Awards range from €25,000 to €3 million, the project duration is 12 to 36 months, and no participating company may account for more than 70% of the total budget. The other regional partners work through SPW Recherche or Innoviris, so the funding structure follows the geography of the consortium. The route fits consortia that can divide work cleanly across regions and keep the collaboration genuinely shared. Applications are rolling, evaluation is continuous with a target turnaround of four months, and research institutes may join as research partners or subcontractors but not as direct beneficiaries. Since 4 April 2025, projects with military finality can also qualify, which widens the route for teams already working at the research-development boundary.
