Research Project (Onderzoeksproject)

Onderzoeksproject (Research Project) is VLAIO's core R&D subsidy for companies and other organisations with economic activity in the Flemish Region. The Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship uses it to support the knowledge-building phase of an innovation track, when a project still needs new technical or scientific insight before it can move into development. Support runs from 25% to 60% of accepted project costs, with a minimum support equivalent to €100,000 and a ceiling of €3 million. Research work is funded at 50% and development work at 25%, with uplifts for small and medium-sized companies and for collaboration. The route is open on a rolling basis, and the notes say defense projects became eligible from 4 April 2025 under the Flemish defense plan. It suits applicants with a clear innovation question, an operational base in Flanders, and enough substance to justify a larger follow-on project. VLAIO expects costs to start only after the application month, so the route rewards teams that can prepare a solid plan before they spend. Strong applications combine technical uncertainty with a credible line to later development and commercial use.
