CNPq Chamada Universal
Funds open-discipline research projects across all knowledge areas for Brazilian PhD researchers.
CNPq Chamada Universal is CNPq's flagship open-discipline research grant for Brazil. The federal agency uses it to support projects in any knowledge area, and the 2024 cycle backed 2,606 projects with R$ 450 million in total funding. The call is structured in two bands: Faixa A offers up to R$ 200,000 for emerging researchers, while Faixa B offers up to R$ 300,000 for consolidated groups. Projects usually run for 36 months, and applicants must be PhD researchers affiliated with a Brazilian scientific or technological institution with a current Lattes CV. Faixa B applications favor PQ holders, and funding is split between CNPq's own budget and FNDCT via MCTI. The program is issued about every one to two years through Plataforma Carlos Chagas. It is best suited to researchers who already have institutional backing, can work within a 36-month window, and can show that their proposal fits the open-discipline model rather than a themed challenge.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
