CFI Northern Fund

Funds infrastructure for institutions in Northern Canada through matched project support and region-specific priority.

Canada Foundation for InnovationCanadaGrant

The CFI Northern Fund sits under the Canada Foundation for Innovation and is built for research infrastructure in Northern Canada. It serves projects conceived, developed, led, and managed by Northern institutions, researchers, and communities, with the North defined as Yukon, Northwest Territories, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut. Only three institutions currently qualify: Yukon University, Aurora College, and Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre. The fund is open for continuous intake from February 2024 through February 2028. Individual proposals can request CAD 250,000 to CAD 2.5 million, and CFI covers 50% of eligible costs, with an additional support stream of up to CAD 50,000 a year for proposal development. That support does not require matching funds. The envelope totals CAD 25 million, and a separate CAD 5 million reserve is set aside for eligible non-profit organizations in the opening years. This is the most place-specific CFI route in the portfolio. Successful applications need strong Northern leadership, Indigenous community co-design, and a direct case that the infrastructure answers a Northern priority rather than a generic research wish. The structure favors institutions that can move steadily through a long intake window and show community benefit, sustainability, and clear operational control.
