SNSF Advanced Grants
Funds advanced Swiss research projects across disciplines for established researchers.
SNSF Advanced Grants was a transitional Horizon Europe measure for Switzerland-based researchers who had been blocked from the ERC Advanced Grant route while Switzerland was non-associated. It has now wound down, because Swiss researchers can apply directly to the European ERC Advanced Grants process again. The scheme offered up to CHF 1.9 million per grant for projects lasting up to five years across all disciplines. It was open to scientists of any nationality conducting research in Switzerland, ran calls in 2022 and 2023, and the 2024 call was not launched. The last cohort approved 16 projects for a total of CHF 31.2 million, announced in January 2025. This was a bridge measure, not a permanent SNSF line. Its value was to keep top-end advanced research funded in Switzerland during the Horizon Europe gap, but that role ended once Swiss applicants could return to the standard ERC route. Applicants now need to use the European process rather than look for a new SNSF call.
