National S&T Major Projects (国家科技重大专项)

Under China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, the National S&T Major Projects are mission-oriented national programs for strategic technology fronts. The active 2026 families include quantum communications and quantum computers, coal, deep earth, Jing-Jin-Ji environmental governance, and magnetic confinement fusion energy. The program family is managed through MOST’s national service portal and the Department V major-project office. Calls are issued on a rolling basis, the application material is in Chinese, and the structure is designed for institutions that can assemble consortium bids rather than individual applicants. These projects are long-duration state efforts, often with major research institutions and state-owned enterprises in leading roles. The strongest fit is a Chinese institution or company with a clear alignment to national priorities and the capacity to coordinate partners across a technical chain. Success depends less on a generic innovation pitch than on matching the project guide, assembling the right lead organisation, and showing that the work can serve a strategic national objective.
