Cure SMA Basic Research Program

Funds global spinal muscular atrophy basic biology projects through annual scientific research grants.

Cure SMAGlobalGrant

Cure SMA's Basic Research Program funds spinal muscular atrophy biology under Cure SMA, a U.S. patient-advocacy foundation with a long research track record. Since 2004, the program has supported more than 128 grants totaling over $15 million, making it the organization's main route for investigator-initiated SMA biology work. Awards run for one or two years at up to $75,000 per year, with a $150,000 ceiling including 8% overhead. Principal investigators and postdoctoral fellows are both eligible, the program is reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Board, and the current cycle is open to researchers around the world as long as the science stays within SMA. Cure SMA uses this award line to back questions about SMA disease biology, reagent and tool development, and other early work that can sharpen later therapeutic strategy. Proposals tend to be strongest when they are novel, tightly tied to SMA mechanisms, and supported by enough preliminary evidence to justify the requested level of funding.
