Energy, Climate and Sustainability Research
Supports German energy transition research through federal programmes in hydrogen, decarbonisation, circular economy, adaptation, and climate technology innovation.
Energy, Climate and Sustainability Research is the BMFTR umbrella strategy for Germany’s climate-technology transition and sustainability innovation. The programme combines long-cycle system work with the FONA strategy and covers hydrogen, industrial decarbonization, circular economy, bioeconomy, climate adaptation, urban sustainability, and seas/oceans. The same umbrella also covers battery work and expanded fusion support. The BMFTR funding profile is above EUR 700 million per year, and the programme is structured through repeated German funding windows rather than a single fixed grant offer. It is aimed at German universities, research organizations, nonprofits, and for-profit teams with applicable energy or sustainability portfolios.
