LIFE Programme
Funds environmental and climate action projects across nature, circular economy, and clean energy.
The LIFE Programme is the European Union's long-running environment and climate instrument under the European Commission, managed by CINEA with policy oversight from DG ENV and DG CLIMA. It has run since 1992 and covers 2021-2027 with about EUR 5.4 billion, making it a flagship channel for EU environmental and climate action. Its four strands are Nature and Biodiversity, Circular Economy and Quality of Life, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, and Clean Energy Transition. LIFE uses grant funding, runs annual calls, supports operating grants for non-profit EU entities, and includes a close-to-market route for SMEs and startups. It is open to for-profit organisations, non-profits, universities, and research organisations, while individuals are excluded. The programme has funded more than 6,500 projects across Europe, so applicants are usually strongest when their proposal fits an established environmental or climate workstream and can be framed for the annual call cycle through the Funding and Tenders Portal. Its value lies in combining policy delivery with practical demonstration and scaling rather than open-ended research.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
