ASTRID
Funds dual-use defence-linked innovation in France through ANR ASTRID, supporting high-impact projects with security relevance and civilian spin potential.
ASTRID is ANR's defence-research programme for highly exploratory projects with low to mid technology maturity. It is financed by the French Defence Innovation Agency and operated by ANR, with a clear dual-use frame that links defence and civilian benefit. Projects can receive up to EUR 400,000 over 18 to 36 months. The programme covers a wide technical range, including robotics, cybersecurity, photonics, materials, energy, biology and health, human-systems interaction, marine engineering, geoscience and artificial intelligence. For-profit, non-profit, university and research-organisation applicants are all eligible, but the work must be based in France and the dual-use requirement applies. ASTRID suits teams that are ready to turn a promising research direction into a defence-relevant result without losing sight of civilian application. Follow-on routes exist through ASTRID Maturation or AID instruments such as RAPID, and the intellectual-property terms are designed to protect strategic value while still allowing exploitation. That makes it a good fit for research groups that can balance technical novelty, defence relevance and clear downstream use.
