HU-RIZONT International Research Excellence Cooperation Programme
Supports Hungarian universities leading international research consortia on innovative solutions.
HU-RIZONT is the National Research, Development and Innovation Office's flagship international research excellence cooperation programme. It is built for Hungarian higher education institutions that lead international consortia, and it supports projects aimed at innovative solutions with relevance for both Hungary and the wider international community. The programme is aligned with the John von Neumann Programme's strategic focus areas and sits at the center of NKFIH's international collaboration offer. The programme runs in annual cycles. The 2025 cycle has already completed and published its supported projects, while the 2026-4.1.2-HU-RIZONT call was open with a HUF 8 billion budget. Lead applicants must be Hungarian higher education institutions, international cooperative partners are required, and the application materials are available in Hungarian and English. The programme is limited to Hungary-based higher education leadership, even though the research itself is meant to be international in scope. HU-RIZONT is a strong fit for universities that already have credible overseas partners and a problem-focused research agenda. Proposals are best positioned when the consortium has a clear reason to work across borders, the research question fits the John von Neumann framework, and the institutional lead can show that the collaboration is more than a formal partnership and is needed to deliver the scientific result.
