Innovative Drug Discovery and Development
Funds research from drug discovery through clinical trials across eight sub-programs and modality platforms.
This program promotes a wide range of research and development from drug discovery to clinical research and trials, contributing to the creation of innovative new drugs and enhancing Japan's drug discovery R&D capabilities. It encompasses eight sub-programs covering platform technology for drug discovery, next-generation treatment modalities, academic drug-discovery support, rare and intractable disease research, infectious disease R&D, regulatory science, and clinical trial acceleration. The program is organized under the Department of Innovative Drug Discovery and Development (iD3), which coordinates three divisions: Pharmaceutical Research and Development (modality-focused platform building), Strategic Planning and Evaluation (academic-seed support with drug-discovery coordinators), and Regulatory Science (non-clinical-to-clinical translation and approval research). Calls for proposals are issued annually per sub-program through the AMED portal.
