Core-to-Core Program

Backs long-term research networks between Japanese institutions and overseas partners across Asia and Africa.

Japan Society for the Promotion of ScienceJapanGrant

Core-to-Core is JSPS's long-term network-building program for Japanese universities and research institutions that want to work with overseas core partners. Since FY2012 it has supported partnerships in leading-edge fields and in issues of high international priority, while also helping build research and education hubs across Asia and Africa. The program has two components: Advanced Research Networks and Asia-Africa Science Platforms. It is intended for sustained institutional collaboration rather than one-off exchanges, and the current record places it in Japan with consortium-style participation required from eligible host institutions. The present cycle is between calls, and JSPS says there will be no open call for FY2027 while the future structure and implementation are still being finalised. The best fit is an institution that can show durable international alignment, a clear research agenda, and a credible role for younger researchers inside the network. A strong proposal should connect the scientific case to the long-term partnership itself, not just to a single project milestone, because the program is built to anchor collaboration over time rather than to fund a short standalone study.
