International Joint Research Program
Backs bilateral joint research projects, seminars, and scientist exchanges between Japanese and overseas research institutions.
The International Joint Research Program sits under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Japan's sole independent research funding agency. It is the bilateral arm of JSPS support, built for joint projects, seminars, and scientist exchanges with partner science agencies abroad. This program uses grant funding on an annual cycle and is open to Japanese universities and research institutes working with overseas counterparts. No single umbrella award cap is listed in the record, because each bilateral sub-program is set separately, but the eligibility requires consortia, allows non-profit and research organizations, excludes for-profits and individuals, and keeps Japan as both the registration and operations country. The current family includes partnerships with SNSF, DFG, UKRI, NSFC, ORA, and NSF's PIRE program. The strongest applications are built around questions too large for one country or one lab, with a clear bilateral structure and an international research partner already in place. English and Japanese documentation are accepted, so the practical work is proving the collaboration design and the scientific value of the joint team.
