Supports pre- and postdoctoral researchers from ASEAN member states and African countries conducting short research in Japan.

Japan Society for the Promotion of ScienceJapanGrant

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan (Short-term PA) serves pre- and postdoctoral researchers from ASEAN member states and African countries who want to conduct short collaborative research in Japan. It sits alongside JSPS's other postdoctoral invitation tracks, but this one is built around nominations only rather than an open application route. The fellowship runs for 1 to 12 months and covers all fields. Eligible candidates are citizens or permanent residents of the listed ASEAN and African countries, or researchers who have been continuously active for at least three years in an eligible country and meet the Japan-diplomacy requirement. They must hold a PhD within six years of the start date, or be enrolled in a doctoral course outside Japan and expected to finish within two years. The package includes round-trip airfare, JPY362,000 per month for PhD holders or JPY200,000 per month for non-PhD holders, a JPY200,000 settling-in allowance for stays of three months or more, and a research support allowance of up to JPY70,000 per month through the host researcher. The annual cycle is best matched to researchers who already have a clear host and a nominating authority that can advance the candidacy. Prior JSPS Standard, Short-term PE, Short-term PA, or Pathway fellowship recipients are ineligible, so the program is aimed at first-time recipients who can use a short stay to deepen a specific collaboration and strengthen their research record.
