Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan (Short-term PE)
Funds short collaborative research visits for PhD students and researchers from Europe and North America to Japanese institutions.
Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan (Short-term PE) brings PhD students and PhD researchers from Europe and North America to Japanese universities and research institutions for short collaborative visits. It is part of JSPS's fellowship family for inviting excellent researchers to Japan, and it is designed for researchers who have not previously worked at a Japanese university. The fellowship runs for 1 to 12 months and accepts candidates from the US, Canada, EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and Russia. Selection runs through Open Calls and Nominations. Eligible candidates must hold a PhD within six years of the start date, or be enrolled in a doctoral course outside Japan and expected to finish within two years. The support package includes round-trip airfare, JPY362,000 per month for PhD holders or JPY200,000 per month for non-PhD holders, a JPY200,000 settling-in allowance for stays of three months or more, and a research support allowance for the host researcher. JSPS runs three recruitment cycles each fiscal year, and the third FY2026 recruitment is open with a 5 June 2026 deadline. The strongest fit is a short, well-defined collaboration with a Japanese host that can move quickly through institutional routing. Prior JSPS Standard, Short-term PE, Short-term PA, or Pathway fellowship recipients are not eligible, so repeat applicants need a different route.
