Japan Society for the Promotion of ScienceJapanGrant

Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan (Standard) is JSPS's long-running route for overseas postdoctoral researchers to spend 12 to 24 months at Japanese universities and research institutions under the guidance of a Japanese host researcher. It covers all fields and sits inside JSPS's broader effort to bring excellent researchers to Japan. The fellowship is open through two channels, Open Calls and Nominations. Candidates must be citizens of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan, hold a PhD obtained within six years of the fellowship start, and avoid any prior JSPS Standard or Pathway fellowship. Host researchers must be affiliated with a KAKENHI-eligible Japanese institution, and the financial package includes round-trip airfare, JPY362,000 per month, a JPY200,000 settling-in allowance, and separate cooperative-research support through the host institution. The annual cycle fits researchers who already have a clear host in Japan and a project that can be executed in a fixed tenure. Applications succeed when the host laboratory can show a coherent collaboration plan, complete paperwork on time, and confirm the candidate's degree status before the start date. It is a practical route for candidates who want a structured research stay rather than a broad institutional appointment.

Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
