NEDO Deep-Tech Startup Support Program (DTSU)
Supports deep-tech startups in Japan through research scaling, prototype validation, and mass production readiness.
The Deep-Tech Startup Support Program (DTSU) is NEDO's flagship multi-phase scaling programme for Japanese deep-tech startups that have moved past NEP-stage early validation. DTSU follows a clear progression where each phase requires demonstrated achievement of the prior phase: 1. **STS (Early R&D Phase)** — Core technology development. Funding up to ¥500 million per project. 2. **PCA (Prototype & Market Validation Phase)** — Prototype building and market testing. Funding up to ¥1 billion per project. 3. **DMP (Mass Production Demonstration Phase)** — Scaling manufacturing and commercialization. Funding up to ¥2.5 billion per project. A separate Unicorn track extends to ¥5 billion per project for the largest-scale support, with NEDO selection signalling significant validation for follow-on private investment. DTSU is designed to address the chronic deep-tech scaling gap where traditional VC alone often cannot underwrite capital-intensive, long-timeline projects. NEDO steps into this gap for high-risk, early-stage technologies critical to Japan's industrial future — robotics, biotechnology, space, next-generation energy, AI, advanced materials. Applications are reviewed in annual rounds. Industry partner co-funding is significant for later phases. NEDO project management includes commercialization focus, IP strategy, and market access support.
