NEDO Green Innovation Fund (GI Fund)
Funds Japanese green technology demonstrations through NEDO Green Innovation Fund for industry transformation toward a lower-carbon economy.
The Green Innovation Fund (GI Fund) is Japan's flagship public investment vehicle for industrial transformation toward carbon neutrality by 2050. METI established the fund through NEDO with an initial ¥2 trillion in the FY2020 Tertiary Supplementary Budget, expanded over time to approximately ¥2.8 trillion (~USD 20 billion). GI Fund supports large multi-year R&D, demonstration, and social implementation projects in green and climate-tech areas including hydrogen supply chain and applications, offshore wind (floating and fixed), solid-state batteries, ammonia co-firing in thermal power, carbon capture and utilization, next-generation digital infrastructure, sustainable aviation fuels, green steel, green chemicals, and next-generation ships. Project characteristics: - Multi-year commitments (up to 10 years of continuous support) - Funding stages: R&D, demonstration, social implementation - Industry consortium structure with Japanese companies as primary recipients - Significant industry partner co-funding required - Milestone-based disbursement tied to commercialization commitment ("social implementation") Notable GI Fund projects: - Next-generation Digital Infrastructure Construction: up to ¥190.12 billion - Hydrogen Supply Chain Construction (Japan Suiso Energy and partners): ~USD 2 billion (~¥250 billion) - Development of Next-Generation Ships: ¥15 billion (launched 20 February 2026) - Solid-state batteries, floating offshore wind, power-to-chemicals: multi-billion yen each Projects are funded by METI through NEDO management. Industry consortium partners co-fund and execute the R&D and demonstration work. Funding decisions are made on individual project basis with strategic alignment to Japan's Green Growth Strategy.
