KENIA (Kenya National Innovation Agency)KenyaPrize

The Presidential Innovation Award (PIA) is KENIA's flagship annual innovation prize, run with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports. It recognizes innovations across University, Youth, Startups, and Research to Commercialization categories, with a 2024-2025 cycle documented in the record. Priority sectors run through digital transformation, healthcare, food security and agriculture, entertainment and gaming, and climate action. Top prizes are KES 5 million for first place, KES 3 million for second, and KES 2 million for third in each category. Youth winners from all 47 counties receive KES 500,000 each, and finalists gain a showcase slot at Kenya Innovation Week plus entry into a five-month accelerator. The most recent cycle included startup pitches, university cohorts, grassroots youth, informal-sector teams, and researchers. The award favors Kenyan teams with a tested minimum viable product, pilot evidence, and a registered business or project capable of commercial follow-through. Teams need at least three members, Kenyan citizen founders, and a clear fit to the problem being solved; intellectual property is helpful but not mandatory. It is a prize program with acceleration attached, so applicants succeed by arriving with proof and traction rather than just an idea.
