BGFA — Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa
Funds private energy firms in Africa through outcomes-based support linked to off-grid connections.
BGFA sits under NEFCO and is the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa, a donor-funded results-based financing programme for private off-grid energy companies. It pays against verified connection outcomes rather than upfront project spend, which makes it closer to performance finance than a conventional grant round. The programme was established in 2019. The programme has completed BGFA1, BGFA2, and BGFA3. Eligible companies operate at scale-up stage in Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Mozambique, Uganda, or Zambia, and the funding mix is paid in EUR and USD. Named donors include Sida, Danida, KfW, Norad, and USAID/Power Africa. The model rewards companies that can document real connections and delivery at volume in rural and peri-urban settings. It suits firms with active operating capacity, local execution partners, and the monitoring discipline needed to prove results, because the funding is tied to verified outcomes rather than simply submitting a proposal.
