Catalyst Fund — Leaders

Offers targeted international fellowships in New Zealand through Catalyst Leaders for researcher mobility and leadership exchange with global partners.

Catalyst Leaders supports incoming and outgoing targeted international fellowships for exceptional individual researchers. It is one of the four Catalyst Fund streams and accounts for about 1 to 5 percent of Catalyst spend, giving the fund a route for people-focused rather than project-focused international exchange. The stream uses grant funding through bespoke fellowship calls, with awards administered by MBIE, the Royal Society Te Apārangi, or the Health Research Council depending on the partnership. Individuals are eligible, and the wider fund covers New Zealand researchers and research organisations working through annual or negotiated international opportunities. The 2024 to 2028 investment plan is the current frame for the stream. The strongest applications make a clear case for international benefit to New Zealand, show that the fellowship has a specific host or counterpart, and explain the research or leadership gains that will flow back into the local system. Where relevant, Vision Mātauranga should be handled in a way that fits the partnership and the discipline, not as a generic add-on. This stream is for people with a defined international opportunity and a credible path to impact at home.
