Māori Agribusiness Innovation Fund
Supports Māori agribusiness innovation through grants for primary sector growth.
The Māori Agribusiness Innovation Fund is MPI's grant route for Māori-owned primary-sector businesses across New Zealand's food and fibre value chain. It sits under the Ministry for Primary Industries and is aimed at projects where innovation and Māori ownership are both central. The fund offers up to NZD 250,000 per project on a rolling basis, subject to availability. Applicants must be legal entities, GST-registered, at least 51% Māori-owned, with key decisions made by Māori, and they must contribute in-kind co-investment. Eligible work includes concept investigation, demonstration, expert advice, and innovation development or evaluation across horticulture, aquaculture, agriculture, and forestry. The strongest applications are those that can show economic, social, cultural, and environmental value alongside innovation capability and delivery capacity. In practice, the fund fits projects that are grounded in the primary sector and can be judged on both commercial development and broader Māori outcomes. Assessment also rewards plain delivery strength, not just a good idea on paper.
