SONATA BIS
Supports experienced Polish researchers establishing new research teams with extended programmatic funding.
SONATA BIS supports experienced researchers who earned their PhD five to twelve years before the submission deadline and want to establish a new research team at a Polish institution. It sits under NCN as one of the agency's career-building basic-research grants. The current record cites a SONATA BIS 14 budget of 150,000,000 PLN. Projects run for 36, 48, or 60 months, and the programme's defining requirement is the hire of a PhD student for at least 36 months. Applications move through the host institution in OSF, and NCN schedules the competition annually with a summer deadline around 15 September. Eligibility is limited to universities and research organisations operating in Poland. SONATA BIS is built for researchers who can lead a new group, not just a single project, and who have a concrete staffing plan from the outset. The programme rewards applicants that can show why a fresh team is needed and how the doctoral hire supports the scientific plan. It is more demanding than SONATA because the proposal has to justify both the research agenda and the team structure.
