FCT-Tenure
Invests in permanent research positions at Portuguese institutions through tenure-track and tenured career recruitment.
FCT-Tenure is FCT's first funding instrument supporting the recruitment of researchers exclusively into permanent career positions, replacing the previous model of fixed-term senior-researcher contracts. Institutions — not individuals — apply with a strategic plan; selected positions are then filled through international competitions run by the host institution. The 1st Edition received applications from 115 institutions requesting co-funding for 2,211 positions; 1,100 positions were provisionally selected for funding under a global budget of EUR 197 million from the State Budget plus PRR investment RE-C06-i06 (Ciência Mais Capacitação). FCT co-funds two thirds of salary costs in the first three years and one third in the second three-year period, for positions in the research career or equivalent. 988 positions are at Auxiliary Researcher / Auxiliary Professor / Adjunct Professor level, 105 at Associate Professor / Principal Investigator level, and 7 at Coordinating Researcher / Full Professor level. 811 of 1,100 positions were awarded as 'Chairs' (Research-Unit Chairs and Non-Academic Chairs) involving formal partnerships. 71 contracting institutions benefit, including universities, polytechnics, R&D units, Associate Laboratories, State Laboratories and non-academic entities. Non-Academic Chairs feed into the PhD Studentships Specific Line, automatically funding PhD candidates linked to those Chairs.
