Formas Biosociety — Fossil-Free and Resilient Bio-based Production
Supports Co funded industry academia consortia for fossil free and resilient bioeconomy and bio based industrial processes in Sweden.
Formas Biosociety is the program Formas uses to back fossil-free and resilient bio-based production under Sweden's bioeconomy mandate. The thematic call funds applied research and innovation in two lanes: primary production for a fossil-free and resilient bioeconomy, and industrial processes for bio-based production. It is an industry-facing route, but one that still expects a research backbone and a clear public-interest rationale. The 2026 thematic call awards from SEK 1 million to SEK 4 million, with projects running 12 to 36 months and starting in November or December 2026. Consortia must include at least three partners, at least two of them from business, and the business side must provide at least 50 percent co-financing. Energy technology development and pharmaceutical development are explicitly excluded. The strongest proposals look like practical collaborations with a defined route from research to production change in Sweden. Applicants do best when they can show industrial relevance, a credible partnership structure, and a use case that fits the bio-based production agenda without drifting into adjacent sectors that the call deliberately leaves out.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
