Senior Research Fellowship
Funds PhD-qualified dementia scholars in the United Kingdom moving into independent group leadership and mentoring roles.
Senior Research Fellowship sits within Alzheimer's Research UK's fellowship portfolio for researchers ready to move from a strong postdoctoral track record into independent dementia leadership. The award is aimed at PhD-qualified scientists based at UK host institutions who can show a clear step toward leading their own group, not simply extending a supervisor's lab. The scheme provides up to £420,000 over four years, with a possible fifth-year extension of up to £120,000. Applicants need a senior sponsor at the host institution, a record of original and productive research, and evidence of independence-building through collaborations beyond prior supervisor relationships. Current tenure or tenure-track status rules candidates out, which keeps the route focused on genuinely transitioning investigators. ARUK runs the call annually and uses a demanding review path: panel triage, rebuttal interviews, lived-experience review, a short interview presentation, and final Grant Review Board decision. The design suits applicants who can demonstrate both scientific independence and the institutional support to build a durable dementia research group in the UK.
