BHF Translational Awards

Funds cardiovascular teams in the United Kingdom moving promising science closer to clinical use.

British Heart FoundationUnited KingdomGrant

BHF Translational Awards are part of the British Heart Foundation's funding offer for cardiovascular research that is ready to move beyond proof of concept. They sit under a charity that spends about £100 million a year on research and uses this scheme to push novel technologies toward benefits for human cardiovascular health and, ultimately, commercial market readiness. Awards run for up to three years and have no fixed funding cap, although applicants are expected to discuss the ask with the BHF team before submission. The scheme is milestone-driven, usually with three to five SMART go or no-go points, and applications move through a two-stage process with a preliminary stage before full review. Projects must be developed with the host institution's Technology Transfer Office. This route suits teams with a clear unmet clinical need, a strong intellectual-property position, and a realistic route to adoption. Commercial partners can appear as collaborators, but the application still needs a credible scientific case, a disciplined development plan, and enough evidence to justify the transition from research to translational delivery.
