Biomedical Catalyst is a joint Innovate UK and Medical Research Council programme for UK businesses working on biomedical innovation. It is aimed at companies that need grant support to move drug discovery, diagnostics, or digital health ideas from early development toward validation. The scheme remains active and carries an annual pot of more than GBP 30 million. Award sizes run from GBP 250,000 to GBP 4 million, with a median actual award of about GBP 1.2 million. The scheme is geared to UK SMEs, sometimes with an academic partner, and the recorded technology range is roughly TRL 3 to 6. It is an annual competition rather than a rolling call. The best fit is a company with a biomedical project that has a defined development path and no competing claim on the same project elsewhere. Applicants do best when the science is specific, the commercial route is credible, and any academic collaboration strengthens the evidence package rather than standing in for a business plan. The programme sits squarely between early research and market-facing product development.
