EPSRC Network Plus
Connects universities and businesses in themed networks to build interdisciplinary translation and practical pathways.
EPSRC Network Plus is an umbrella funding mode under EPSRC for themed research networks, not a single standing programme. It brings together universities and research partners across the UK to build interdisciplinary communities and push translation in priority areas. Current examples include Reimagining Circularity, Materials Innovation Programme Coordination, and other themed calls that run in parallel or one after another. These awards are grant-funded and usually require university-led consortia. The Materials Innovation call offers up to £1.38 million per application, with a total fund of £5.7 million, while the circularity theme is jointly backed with Defra and carries a larger envelope. Calls are typically two-stage with an intent-to-submit step, and the themes are specific rather than open-ended. This route suits teams that are trying to coordinate a field, not just deliver a single research project. Successful bids generally show a credible plan for convening partners, shaping a shared agenda, and creating a pathway from community building into applied follow-on work. Businesses can participate as partners, while the lead normally sits with a UK research organisation.
