Innovate UK ICURe (Innovation to Commercialisation of University Research)

Innovate UK ICURe is the UK’s early-stage research pre-accelerator for academic teams that want to test whether research has commercial potential before a spin-out decision. It has been active since 2014 and has helped build a sizeable body of follow-on investment, with the programme itself positioned as a bridge between research and market validation. The pathway has four stages: Engage, Discover, Explore, and Exploit. Explore is the main market-test stage, lasting 12 weeks and carrying up to GBP 35,000 of funding, while Exploit is the 12-week spin-out preparation stage. Multiple cohorts run each year, and the programme is open across most technology and research areas, with some sector-specific cohorts as needed. The best fit is a university-led research team that needs hard market evidence before deciding on a company formation path. Applicants do best when they treat ICURe as a structured validation process: articulate the market question clearly, use the stage to test demand, and be ready to move in sequence through the next phase if the evidence is strong.
